AVID Basics
The Master Binder
Students are expected to bring their Master binder (a 3-ringed zippered binder), which includes the ACSS agenda book, and supplies, to ALL classes (unless the teachers states otherwise). Students are also expected to take their Master binder home and bring it back to school daily.
The general qualities of the Master Binder:
The general qualities of the Master Binder:
- All written assignments, notes, and tests are to be done in dark blue or black ink or pencil
- All pages need to be secured
- Subject work is located behind the correct divider and places in order by date
- The top of each page has the student's name, date, title, etc.
The Agenda
We provide an agenda for all students and expect it to be used on a regular basis. AVID 9 students need to keep an agenda book in the Master Binder at all times! Before students leave each class, they are required to copy down any homework, projects, upcoming tests, or if homework was not assigned, simply jot down "No HW". It is a good idea to check with the teacher to ensure the correct information is recorded before leaving.
An agenda book is a communication tool that connects school and home. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s agenda book usage on a regular basis. Many teachers communicate with home via the agenda and parents are also encouraged to communicate with the school in this way. It is the student’s responsibility to let their parents and teachers know of any new communication in the Agenda.
In AVID 9, the agenda book will be checked regularly at the start of the school year, and then evaluated randomly throughout the year.

The Electronic Planner
In later AVID grades, students can choose to keep using their agenda or keep track of their assignments and tests using an app on their phone. They must be able to demonstrate daily use when assessed. There are many great apps out there, some even with alarms to remind students about due dates or study time! The school's MySchoolDay App is a great option.
Focused Notetaking
Focused notetaking (Cornell notes, graphic organizers, etc.) are strategies to maximize student learning/understanding. It is expected that students utilize notetaking strategies in ALL of their classes. Here is an example of a page set up for Cornell Notes:
Study Groups / AVID Tutorial
AVID study groups or tutorials are not traditional tutorials, which typically involve a one-on-one arrangement with a tutor instructing the student how to do something. AVID tutorials are set up so that small groups of students in the same class or subject area, develop a deeper understanding of their course material using higher level questioning.
Tutorials occur at least once a week in AVID elective classes. Sometimes with the assistance of post-secondary students (past grads of ACSS) or senior AVID students, younger AVID students learn the value of this collaborative time where they can zero in on areas where they need clarification or deepen their understanding about a concept. Eventually, students run their own effective study groups. TUTORIALS ARE NOT INTENDED FOR HOMEWORK COMPLETION - THIS SHOULD BE DONE AT HOME! Tutorials are a time to get help with questions students did not understand, time to discuss topics or readings covered in class, time to prepare study materials, or quiz each other for an up-coming test. Tutorials may also be a good opportunity to consult with the post-secondary or senior student mentors regarding their experiences in their classes at university or here at ACSS.

AVID Service Hours
Future employers and many post-secondary institutions like to see that students are well-rounded individuals. They want to see that in addition to earning high marks in school, students are involved in making their school and community a better place. During AVID 9 & 10, students are expected to provide at least 10 hours of service to the school or community each year. In order to meet graduation requirements, grade 11 & 12 students need a total of 30 hours of work or volunteer experience. We encourage students to get involved to make a positive impact, not to increase their chances of receiving scholarships and other recognition.
Some suggestions for Service Hours at the school include:
-helping students organize their binders or tutor younger students with their homework
-be a buddy to a special needs student
-help teachers with bulletin boards
-write newspaper articles about AVID for the school newsletter or the Aldergrove Star
-give presentations about AVID in Grade 8 classes, staff meetings, or parent meetings
-help with student council activities
-score keep or referee volleyball or basketball matches.
-become a Totem Ambassador when in grade 11 and 12
Some suggestions for Service Hours in the community include:
-help out with an event at your old elementary/middle school
-volunteer at a local event like a fundraising run or walk
-help out those in need at a home for the elderly
-help out at the local food bank
-collect and donate items needed to help people in shelters.
The ideas are endless, talk to your AVID teacher to suggest a new idea!!
